20 THINGS ABOUT NSA

Some brief snippets of information explaining what Napier Students' Association is...

11. The Sports Union – NSA runs Napier’s Sports Union and its clubs. More than 500 students are actively involved in our sports clubs and we want more this year. Get involved in university sport – competitive or recreational - it’s healthy, a good way of meeting like-minded people and it’s fun. If we don’t already have the club for you, we’ll help you set one up.

12. A Campaigning organisation – from raising awareness of issues among our own students, like campus security and health matters, to campaigning to change things, NSA is involved in local and national campaigning initiatives.

ISAS

13. The Advice Service – We have 4 professional staff members in ISAS – the Independent Student Advice Service - who can provide you with practical, up to date, confidential, one-to-one, impartial advice and support on anything to do with: money funding, debt, uni fees, uni regulations and hearings, problems on course, landlords and tenancies, employers. It’s a tailor-made service for Napier students, but independent of the university – so there’s no conflict of interest. It consistently sees over 1000 Napier students every year.

14. Student Societies – Student societies have been growing from a narrow base at Napier. Some of the best people you’ll ever meet you’ll meet in a student society of like-minded people engaging in shared activities. Drama, Whisky, Christian, Islamic, Chinese…..We need students to tell us what societies they want, so that we can help them set up new societies for students.

Union Bar

15. Social Space Provider – At 12 Merchiston Place, there’s your Student Union Bar. It is a place to hang out with student friends, watch TV, play pool, have some cheap drinks and have a chat.

16. A partner in Napier’s Programme Rep system – Napier has one of the best student representative systems in Scotland. NSA plays a prominent role in it - providing students reps with training, a rep handbook and ongoing information and support to enable them to be effective in sorting out academic quality issues on course.

17. A Communicator – Check out this website regularly for all the latest news updates. Our elected officers also act as official spokespeople on behalf of the students at Napier.

18. A Negotiating organisation for students on academic and support standards – NSA has representation, within Napier, formally and informally, at service and senior levels. We have 2 Student Governors on the University Court, regular access to the senior management team and the principal’s office, as well as seats on most of the committees and working parties dealing with the running of the university. We can put a student perspective across and influence outcomes.

19. Part funder of the student newspaper, Veritas – NSA provides the paper with an annual start up budget to help a team get the paper up and running. Other than that, it’s editorially independent. Whether you fancy being a newshound, a features writer, reviewer, photographer, sub-editor, or ad sales co-ordinator – there are plenty of ways to get involved. Contact veritas@napier.ac.uk for more info.

20. Free Condoms – Many students are not sexually active and we respect that, but for those who are, we want them to be safe from sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancy. Pick up a C-Card from upstairs at 12 Merchiston Place for free condoms.
