Holiday Working – Your rights

Many students choose to take temporary jobs during holidays. Many students choose to take temporary jobs during holidays. Employment rights for temporary work can be a bit of a minefield, but there are some basic rights that apply whether you’re working full time or part-time; as a company employee or through an agency; or on a temporary or permanent contract.

First of all, you’re entitled to get at least the minimum wage. Minimum wage thresholds are updated in October each year, and can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates

Secondly, you are entitled to paid holiday from the first day you start work. Your employer may choose to ‘roll up’ your holiday pay with your wages (so it’s up to you to put this aside for days you don’t work). If your employer does this, it must be clearly indicated on your pay slip what is wages, and what is holiday pay.

All employees are entitled to be safe at work, and have legal health and safety rights, and anti-discrimination protection.

If you have any questions or concerns about your rights at work, you can contact the ENSA Advice team for further information on 0131 229 8791
