Rugby League - Napier’s most decorated sports club, has boomed in the last 7 years, with players representing Scotland at regional, student, ‘A’ Team and full professional levels. “The Knights“ - BUSA North League Champions 07/08 – have consistently performed at a high level and regularly secure vital BUCS Championship points for the University. The club were also named Code 13 Magazine team of the month in January 2008.
Despite being the only student rugby league club in Scotland, Napier has developed into one of the best teams in the UK, with their great team spirit and commitment regularly commented on by their opposition, fans and referees. Last year was a learning experience and the club struggled to come to terms with their promotion to Premier North after losing the core of their successful side that had seen 3 players capped for the full Scotland side - with Paddy Coupar getting selected for the World Cup in Australia. This year we return to the BUCS North League and look to develop another successful side and hopefully bring more silverware back to the Union.
The Knights are hoping to get a Fresher’s XIII out this year to aid with the development of the club and we even offer a social membership option for non-players and operate a Wives and Girlfriends (WAGS) section - “The Maidens”- to keep them happy and above all involved. Rugby League really is an open invitation to anyone and this helps us create a really vibrant and dynamic club where we like to work hard and play hard.
Many of the current internationalists had never played the sport before coming to Napier, meaning that potentially anyone has the chance to pull on a Scotland jersey. The club is Coached by Scotland A and Edinburgh Eagles Head Coach Angus McNab who also went to the Rugby League World Cup in Australia last year and is passionate supporter of University Sport. He will be assisted by last year’s NSA Student Activities Officer and now East of Scotland Rugby League Development Officer, Mike Wallace, who will coach when Gus is away with the Scotland Squad in October/November.
Let’s forget the Rugby for the minute: The Knights are one of the most socially active teams at the university and continue to be supported by The 3 Sisters and the NSA bar. If you want to play, train, support and skite at the highest level, make mates that will last a lifetime, have an awesome time and something to remember from your uni experience, then you want to become a Napier Knight!
