Overview

Nick Estcourt Award

Description

Funding for UK-based expeditions that are attempting an objective of considerable mountaineering significance.

Current Status
Open for Applications
Maximum value:
£ 2,000

Objectives of Fund

The Award was established to commemorate Nick Estcourt's climbing achievements, and to encourage future generations of expedition mountaineers in the UK.

Value Notes

One grant of up to £2,000 is made each year to expeditions which the Trustees consider most likely to further expedition mountaineering.

Match Funding Restrictions

The grant is not expected to form more than part of the expedition's finances.  The Trustees must be satisfied that other funds are available, and that personal contributions are of a sufficient proportion.  The application form must clearly describe the intended sources of finance or sponsorship for the expedition, particularly those which may have a bearing on the conduct of the expedition in the field.

Who Can Apply

UK-based expedition teams are eligible to apply for the Award.  All expedition members must prove their mountaineering experience and suitability to attempt the objective.

At least 50% of the applicants must be British and the expedition must have a British leader.

Restrictions

Grants will not be awarded to expeditions that carry bolts.

Awards will not be made to expeditions with a significant commercial or military element.

Applications from expeditions to easily accessible areas (eg the Alps) or those with ill-defined objectives are unlikely to be successful.

The Award cannot provide assistance for expeditions that run into financial difficulties.

Eligible Expenditure

Applications are invited from expeditions attempting an objective of considerable mountaineering significance.  This might be a previously unclimbed face, ridge or summit, or a repeat of an existing route, but in a more challenging style or conditions.

Applications are considered solely in terms of their mountaineering merit. Scientific and other objectives are not taken into account.

Expeditions must make every reasonable effort to leave the mountain in its original state.

Deadline(s):

The annual application deadline is 31 December for postal applications and 31 January for applications submitted by email.

Frequency: Annual.
