Grants are available to groups and individuals in Scotland for activities in the categories of sport; recreational facilities; animal welfare; health; and culture.

Objectives of Fund

The objective of the Trust is to support individuals, groups and charities in Scotland who are struggling to secure funding for their activities from mainstream sources.

Value Notes

Grants of up to £25,000 are available.

The Trust reserves the right to award grants in full or in part depending on its assessment of the merits of the application.

All awards are for one year or less. Successful applicants must wait a calendar year before reapplying for further funding for the same activity. However, applications for further funding within that period may be made if it is not to be used for the same purpose as the original application.

Match Funding Restrictions

100% funding is unlikely, applicants should be able to evidence of efforts being made to raise other funds.

Who Can Apply

Applications are accepted from groups and charities that are:

  • Based in Scotland providing services in Scotland.
  • Struggling to secure funds through mainstream funders or who have unsuccessfully explored all the statutory sources of funding.
  • Have an income of under £100,000 per year.

Non-charitable organisations can apply as long as:

  • Their work meets a qualifying category - sport, health, culture, recreational facilities or animal welfare.
  • They are seeking less than £25,000.
  • They are not a commercial venture or any other group.
  • They are not seeking sponsorship.
  • They are based and deliver your services in Scotland.
Restrictions

The Trust does not fund:

  • Groups or charities with an income of over £100,000 per year
  • Individuals
  • Commercial activity
  • Research
  • Educational establishments
  • Social enterprises
  • Governing bodies
  • Public sector bodies
  • One off events
  • Large capital projects
  • Community Councils, PTAs or Active Schools Activities
  • Pilot projects

The Trust cannot provide sponsorship and will not fund applications for the following:

  • Projects/activities that do not meet one of the Trust's Qualifying Categories.
  • Debt reduction.
  • Redundancy payments.
  • Fees or payouts for legal actions raised against a group/charity.
  • Retrospective funding
  • Applicants based outwith Scotland.
  • Activities carried out outwith Scotland.
Eligible Expenditure

Grants are available to support services/projects in the following categories:

  • Sport
    Projects to encourage and increase public participation in sport (eligible activities should involve physical skill and exertion).
  • Recreational facilities
    Providing or organising recreational facilities with the aim of improving the conditions of life for the people for whom the facilities are primarily intended. This is only in relation to facilities or activities which are primarily intended for people who need them due to age, ill- health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage.
  • Animal welfare
    The advancement of animal welfare.
  • Health
    The advancement of health, including prevention or relief of sickness, disease or human suffering.
  • Culture
    Supporting the heritage - tangible or otherwise - of Scotland, through projects that encourage participation in and preservation of Scotland's distinctive culture.

The Trust will also consider any applications that may reasonably be regarded as comparable to any of the above purposes.

Grants are available for any purpose that provides a benefit to the applicant's target audience.

Examples of eligible activities and costs are as follows:

  • Capital projects (such as equipment, fixtures, fittings and refurbishments).
  • One-off projects.
  • Running costs.
  • Core costs.
  • Salaries.
How To Apply

The closing dates for applications are the end of February and end of August each year.

Applications can be submitted online at the Trust website. Application forms are also available from the Trust website and can be submitted by post or email.

All applications will be acknowledged and applicants will be informed of the date that their application will be considered.

Unsuccessful applicants will be advised by the Trust if they can reapply for funding in the next round of grants.

Applicants that have not met a Qualifying Category will not be able to reapply.
