My name is Alistair, and I'm a fourth year BA (Hons) International Festivals and Event Management student at Edinburgh Napier University. My passion for creating an inclusive and supportive campus environment has been shaped as a mature student at the university.
As a result of returning to education, I have gained a deeper understanding of the transformative power of education and the importance of the right time to return. My own experience has shown the importance of promoting mental health and support initiatives, particularly for those impacted by the care system.
My commitments are:
- Be the voice of disabled, LGBTQ+, and care-experienced students, advocating for their needs and fostering a more inclusive university community.
- Provide quiet zones for all students, enhancing accessibility and academic success.
- Ensure equal opportunities and a supportive environment for students with physical disabilities by improving university infrastructure.
- Encourage the implementation of a rent guarantor scheme to ease students' housing challenges, ensuring secure and affordable accommodation is accessible to all.
- Promote mental wellness initiatives within the university community and advocate for increased counselling services.
- Advocate for improved cross-campus transportation.
- Redesign how societies are promoted throughout the year, so that students have continuous opportunities to participate and engage.
- Improve education affordability by lobbying for transparent and fair academic material pricing and strive to minimise financial barriers to accessing quality education.
- Promote diversity and inclusion by fostering a welcoming and respectful campus culture, where everyone feels valued and represented.
Through transparent and accountable leadership, I aspire to create a university community where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances.
