phishing

There have been reports of a significant number of students who have received a “phishing” email purporting to be from the University’s Finance Department. These scam emails originate from student email addresses at another University. The email claims that the receiving student has been awarded a grant and asks them to click a link to complete a form with their details.

This link directs to a fake university-branded webpage, hosted on a server in the US. The page asks for details such as DOB, Mother’s maiden name, bank details etc. This page is a sophisticated attack to steal valuable personal data that can be used to get past online banking security checks.

All students should be wary of this attack. The University will not ask you to submit details like this online. If you receive an email like this DO NOT click the link and DO NOT fill in your details.

If you are ever unsure of the legitimacy of any email claiming to be from the University, forward it on to Information Services who will be able to confirm if it is a genuine email or not.
