HM Revenue and Customs are warning that a fake tax refund scam is targeting students in an attempt to steal money and personal details.
Thousands of fraud reports have been recieved in recent weeks from students at Universities and Colleges across the UK.
The emails appear to come from ligitimate-looking email addresses such as '@uc.ac.uk' to try and trick students into clicking the links. Do not fill in your details via any such link - fraudsters will attempt to use this information to steal money from your account.
Mel Stride, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury says: “HMRC will never inform you about tax refunds by email, text or voicemail. If you receive one of these messages it is a scam. Do not click on any links in these messages, and forward them to HMRC’s phishing email address.”
