Why You Need to Be More ‘Extra’ with Your Extra-Curricular Activities

When we talk about someone being “extra”, we usually think they’re a bit over the top, maybe dramatic, definitely noticeable…normally not a label people rush to claim for themselves. But when it comes to your extra-curricular activities, being a little more extra can be exactly what sets you apart!

Part-time work, volunteering and joining student clubs and societies can sometimes feel like an add on to your degree - something you might need to do for some extra income, or would like to do if you had time, but not really the main focus of your time at University. Here’s the truth: these experiences are the often the things that make you stand out to potential employers, allow you to develop key skills and even help you make some career decisions for the future.

Let’s look at part-time work. It not only helps pay the bills and the occasional night out, but it also gives you those highly prized skills employers want - teamwork, problem-solving, communication, resilience. Part-time work gives you to evidence you need to show an employer you understand workplace expectations, and that you have the skills and experience they are looking for.

Volunteering brings its own sparkle. Supporting causes that you care about gives you a fresh perspective and can reveal strengths you didn’t even know you had. Employers also love to see that you’ve given your time freely - it shows motivation, commitment and values that go beyond your degree.

Find opportunities on MyFuture

If you’re actively looking for part-time work or volunteering opportunities, you can browse a range of jobs on our student jobs board via myFuture. We’ll also be hosting our Part-time Job & volunteering Fair in trimester one (17th Sept) and two (TBC) and you can find out more information here.

Then there are student societies. Whether you’re organising events, managing a budget, or simply showing up with enthusiasm - you’re building networks, friendships and experiences that make great talking points in interviews. Plus, you might just discover passions or career interests you’d never considered.

The real value in all these activities is how they help you figure out you. By trying out different roles and responsibilities, you start to notice what you do (and don’t) enjoy! Think of it as career research in disguise - with added coffee breaks, new friends and maybe a society hoodie or two.

Employability & Careers are dedicated to providing tailored support for all students. If you would like to book in for a careers appointment, you can do this on myFuture.
