As the new academic year begins, your student life quickly fills with lectures, part-time work, volunteering, and family commitments, all competing for your time. What else is on your mind during your studies? Do you think about your career plans and life after graduation? Are these questions more pressing in the final year or on day one of your course?

Whatever stage of career planning you’re at, attending a career fair can help you generate new ideas or settle the one you might be thinking about.

These events may seem like yet another commitment. Perhaps it feels a bit overwhelming or intimidating to go. Maybe you wonder if career fairs are relevant to your plans. What if you looked at careers fairs as a growth opportunity worth your time and energy?

Career fairs are a chance for you and for recruiters to meet, network and learn:

  • Meeting familiar and new companies means expanding your labour market horizon. Recruiters attending career fairs offer real opportunities and are keen to come to your campus to let you know what’s going on in the world of work.
  • Networking as building professional connections is one of the most useful skills in work life. Linking up with recruiters at a fair can be the initial step to develop relationships with them and let them know what you could bring to their team.
  • Speaking to potential employers can be a great learning curve.  You can learn about opportunities, understand recruiter expectations and current industry challenges. Learning the bigger picture of the labour market can add to self-confidence and take away anxieties about job search uncertainties. Students who network are more employable | News

Having done your planning and preparation for a career fair, these events can be an enjoyable experience and an eye opener for your career planning.
