We are recruiting a Student Lay Director to serve on our Edinburgh Napier University Students' Association Board of Directors!

Edinburgh Napier Students’ Association (ENSA) exists to enable students to make the most of their university experience. We do this by representing, supporting and developing Edinburgh Napier students to be successful in their studies; to try out new things; to engage in, and contribute to, university life; to be healthy and happy; to bring about positive change; and to have fun.

ENSA is looking for reliable and committed students to fill our Student Lay Director position to start early in the new term. This is a voluntary role open to all current students of Edinburgh Napier University who will be here for the full 2025/2026 academic year.  This can be a two year appointment.

Why serve as a Student Lay Director?

The Student Lay Director will support the mission of the Students’ Association by serving in a voluntary capacity on our Board of Directors.  This is an excellent opportunity to develop a broad range of skills, such as decision-making and financial analysis, to increase your employability whilst ensuring students are properly heard and represented. No previous Board experience is required.

If you want to stand out from the crowd when it comes to finding a job after you graduate, this is something that will really impress potential future employers!

Here’s what a former Student Lay Director had to say about his experience:

‘Serving on the Board has done so much for me both personally and professionally, giving me invaluable Board experience which has given me transferable skills in governance of an organisation, people management, inter-organisational relationship management and recruitment experience, just to name a few things, all of which have massively aided me in securing a graduate job - can’t think what I would have done without the experience I gained from ENSA!’

What does the Board of Directors do?

The Board of Directors has overall responsibility for ENSA’s governance, for upholding its values and ensuring it delivers for students. It sets the overall strategic direction for the organisation and evaluates progress towards objectives. To learn more about what ENSA does for students, please check out our Impact Report.

Appointments are expected to last one year with the possibility of a second term.

All Directors are expected to prepare for and attend Board meetings, usually four a year, and serve the Board’s sub-committee (Finance and Risk which meets two times a year). The time commitment required is up to 2 hours per meeting plus reading the papers.
