Student Update: Upcoming Strike Action

The EIS trade union has called on its members to take strike action as part of an ongoing dispute around the University review. While the University will remain open, some of your classes may be affected.

The EIS said “…the institution (is) now moving toward compulsory redundancies of staff after a targeted round of voluntary exits. Cuts are expected to affect both academic and professional services staff, including those in areas directly supporting teaching, mental health, disability services and student retention.”

Unison, the Union of Support Service staff, are not taking strike action.

Key Strike Dates

  • Week 1: Tuesday 10 & Thursday 12 February
  • Week 2: Monday 16 & Friday 20 February
  • Week 3: Tuesday 24, Wednesday 25 & Thursday 26 February
  • Week 4: Monday 2, Tuesday 3 & Thursday 5 March

What this means for you

  • Check before you trek: Staff don't have to declare if they are striking in advance. Check your University email, the Napier app, and Moodle for last-minute updates.

  • Business as usual: If you haven’t heard otherwise, attend classes as normal. Libraries, IT labs, ENSA and catering will remain open. ENSA will continue to run all events and activities on strike days. For full event listings see napierstudents.com/ents

  • Support is available: The ENSA Advice service will remain open to students on all proposed strike dates. Please book an appointment in the normal way. If you’re worried about how strikes affect your assessments or wellbeing, you can also contact your Personal Development Tutor or Student Wellbeing.

  • Results Support: Trimester 1 results come out Monday 9 February. ENSA’s Advisers will be hosting Results Support Stalls on Wednesday 11 February (12pm–2pm) at all campuses – drop in if you would like to discuss your results and the next steps

Getting Involved

The Students’ Association (ENSA) currently remains neutral, and it is up to you whether you choose to support the strike action or not. However, you can have your say on whether you think ENSA should hold an emergency student meeting to discuss the issue in our "Question of the Week".

  • Demos On Campus: You may see staff demonstrations at campus entrances. You are invited to join them if you wish to do so. Please remain respectful of those taking part, and those trying to enter/exit the campus.

Note: Any pay deducted from striking staff will be redirected to the Student Funding team to help students in financial difficulty.

The University appreciate that uncertainty can be frustrating, and they apologise for any disruption this may cause. Please check MyNapier, Edinburgh Napier app and your University email regularly for updates. Some academic staff may also post information on Moodle.
