If you are planning to stay in Edinburgh over the winter break, you may be worried about feeling lonely or being away from family during this time.  We have gathered together some places you can turn to help you keep busy, volunteer, socialise or access support if you are staying at university over the holidays.

  • Student Minds have some useful tips if you are staying at University over the winter break.
  • Donate a gift to someone experiencing homelessness and/or volunteer at the Tree of Kindness in St. Andrews Square.
  • The Salvation Army provide a wide range of Christmas volunteering opportunities.
  • Get involved with Crisis by attending a Crisis event, volunteering your time or providing gifts. 
  • Marchmont St. Giles Parish Church is holding a “Blue Service” for those struggling at Christmas on Saturday 20th December at 2pm.
  • Andy's Man Club is running as usual over the Festive Season (in room A55 Merchiston), 7-9pm on Mondays (with the exception of 29 December when the group is not meeting)
  • Here are some places you can access Free Food and Meals in Edinburgh
  • ERA (Edinburgh Recovery Activities) are having a Christmas party of sorts on the 17th of December, and a sober Hogmanay event on New Year’s Eve - this will be shared through their Facebook page.
  • Social Bite is opening its doors on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day for those experiencing homelessness in Edinburgh to enjoy a free festive meal. 
  • Morningside United Church is hosting various services and concerts over the Christmas period.

  • Find a Warm & Welcoming Space in one of these Edinburgh city council venues such as libraries, community centres, museums and galleries. Find your nearest space here. You can access public spaces where you can feel comfortable spending time to drop in or to access services or activities.
  • Wood Street Social Club, Glasgow is putting on a free Christmas dinner in the east end of Glasgow on Sunday, December 21. Places are limited, so contact them in advance to book a spot.
  • Hibernian Community Foundation is planning to supply 400 community members meals and provide 100 more meals via delivery to community members in the surrounding area. If you or someone you know will benefit from one of the meals, click here for registration
  • Steps to Hope (Edinburgh and West Lothian) offers an annual sit-down Christmas dinner as well as brand new clothing to anyone who is homeless or suffering from addiction.
