Between lectures, deadlines, socials and late night library sessions, university life can feel like a blur. But every now and then, an opportunity comes along that leaves a lasting mark, not just on your CV, but on you.
That's what Edinburgh Nightline is all about.
Every night of term, while most of the city is winding down, students across Edinburgh pick up the phone and log onto chats to be there for someone who needs to talk.
Edinburgh Nightline is a confidential listening service run by students, for students, where every conversation is built on one simple principle: listening without judgement.
Make a real difference
You don't need previous experience to join Nightline. If you're compassionate, curious and willing to learn, they’ll teach you everything you need to know.
Before your first shift, they’ll support you through training inspired by programmes delivered by organisations including Samaritans, giving you the confidence to support fellow students through active listening and signposting.
More than volunteering - find your community!
Ask a Nightline volunteer what they love most, and chances are they'll say it's the people.
"Nightline, without a doubt, reshaped who I am and has been the greatest thing I have done. I'm from Edinburgh, yet my core friend group has come from current and former volunteers – such caring people from all walks of life, all joining with the same goal of helping others. In the end, they've done exactly that for me too."
Between shifts, there are socials, workshops, and even volunteer trips away together, creating a community of students united by a shared care for the same cause.
Nightline prides itself on looking out for each other as much as they look out for callers. From the moment you apply, Nightline's dedicated welfare team is there to make sure you always have someone to turn to whenever you need it.
Ready to get involved?
Nightline could be for you if you're:
- A student aged 18 or over at a university or college in Edinburgh.
- Someone who can listen without judgement.
- Happy to give information rather than advice.
- Committed to keeping conversations confidential.
- Able to volunteer for one shift every 2-3 weeks.

Applications are now open at Edinburgh Nightline.
- Training dates: 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th October
- Application deadline: 27th September at 12pm
