Upskilling is a buzz word frequently appearing in publications on the future of work. For example, PwC Global advocates for upskilling of organisations, moving on from the skills of today to those of tomorrow. In their 2024 report ‘Upskilling the UK Workforce’, International Monetary Fund highlights skills shortages and factors contributing to those challenges.
What does upskilling mean?
Upskilling is the process of developing new skills to improve performance in a current role. It’s different to reskilling which means learning skills for a different position. A software engineer may learn a new programming language, or a team manager may learn to use data analytics tools.
The benefits of upskilling are at least two-fold.
Individual: Developing new skills improves your ability to perform at work and builds confidence beyond the minimum requirements of your role. Upskilling increases competence, boosts motivation, and opens opportunities for professional growth.
Organisational: The main benefit of upskilling staff is workers’ improved efficiency and effectiveness. This translates to fewer errors and supports better staff retention, which in the long run supports lower hiring costs.
So what could you do to upskill?
Students are encouraged to consider all their options, including virtual internships. These can be a useful learning experience and an alternative to placements or part-time work. The University partners with Forage, who offer virtual job simulations.
