Nightline Student Volunteers
Edinburgh Nightline is a confidential and non-judgemental support and information charity, run by students, for students.
Telephone and messaging support lines are open from 8pm till 8am for 5 days a week: Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Nightline's listening volunteers ensure every student has the opportunity to talk about their feelings in a safe, non-judgemental environment.
Volunteers are supported by each other, and have formed a great support network. All Nightline needs from volunteers is enthusiasm and an understanding of the service.
Edinburgh Napier students are guaranteed an interview for the role as long as their application meets these criteria:
- Any AI-generated responses will be automatically rejected
- Any clear breaks/violations of our key principles (a complete lack of understanding - particularly for inclusion)
Applications to become an Edinburgh Nightline volunteer are now open on a rolling basis. Training usually takes place at the start of each semester. If you apply after the training has taken place, your application will be considered in the next semester. Please apply here.
Are you able to listen but not judge? Can you give information but not advice? Can you spare a few nights every term to support other students?
Volunteers are an integral part of Nightline's organisation and receive an extremely high level of initial and ongoing training, based around training delivered by other organisations such as the Samaritans. Student volunteers are responsible for taking calls and e-listenings, for fundraising, and for the general upkeep of the service.
The welfare of volunteers is something Nighline values greatly. Listening volunteers are provided with support throughout their role, with a dedicated welfare team available from when you first register your interest until your final duty.
Am I the right person for Nightline?
Nightline is always looking for students who are able to listen with empathy without judging or trying to give advice. You must be able and willing to keep any involvement you have in Nightline a secret.
Training sessions run once per semester and no experience is required – just enthusiasm for the cause. Volunteers are required to attend specific training days, and must be willing to commit to one duty every 2-3 weeks.
Note that volunteering is only available to students age 18+ in an Edinburgh-based College or University.
Nightline has a number of Pre-training Minorities Resources that prospective volunteers are encouraged to look at.
