American Football

American Football is the fastest and most exciting collision sport in the world. Regardless of your body shape or size there is a position for everyone whether you are fast and small, or large and strong. We often attract ex-Rugby players to the team who are looking for a little more contact but no experience is necessary to play and we train complete novices to become adept at the game in a few short weeks.

The reigning Division 2 North Champions the Knights pride themselves on being a professionally run student club. We wish all our members to have fun whilst learning to play the sport and competing at the highest level. The Knights provide all kit and players are required to provide only appropriate footwear and a gum shield. Our goals for each season:

  • To provide opportunities to increase participation in sport through the use of American Football
  • To increase the profile and awareness of the sport of American Football
  • To be the largest, highest profile, and most successful team in Edinburgh Napier University each year
  • To challenge for the Division title each season (winning Division 1 North and reaching the promotion playoffs)

TEAM HISTORY

American Football has been played at Edinburgh Napier University since 2003. The team plays in the British Universities American Football League which is a member of BUCS. Student American Football has been played in the UK since 1985 and there are now over 70 competing universities throughout the UK competing for the prestigious National Championship.

The Napier team was reborn in 2010 as the Edinburgh Napier Knights and finished that season with a 5-2-1 record and as a Playoff team for the first time. Coached by Pete Laird a previous College Bowl winner, and a 6 time Scottish Division Champion, we have built an impressively talented staff of assistant coaches, physiotherapists and Strength & Conditioning coaches. The 2011 season saw the introduction of the Varsity Bowl game between the Knights and the Edinburgh University Predators. The game is played at Meggetland Stadium Edinburgh with over 1000 spectators in attendance and is now a headline event during the university year which the Knights have won the last 3 years in a row. The Knights were undefeated in 2016-17 to retain their Division 2 title and earn promotion to Division 1.

SOCIAL

The Knights have a well-established and infamous social calendar. From our legendary bar-golf tour, our Toga party, Karaoke party with Napier Cheerleaders, through to our highly successful Ceilidhs, the team takes great pride in bonding on and off the field. Held on the same day as the Varsity game our Superbowl Party is the biggest in the city. The Knights also run several fundraising events for local charities and volunteer with Edinburgh Leisure’s Sports Festivals promoting the sport to the young people of Edinburgh.
