Academic Integrity and Artificial Intelligence

Over the course of the last academic year, ENSA's advice service has seen an increase in the number of students requesting support for Academic Integrity investigations and is aware of a general rise in investigations across the university. This trend has continued into 2026/27 with the Advice Team already opening 25 new academic misconduct cases in September 2026 so far.

Many of these cases seem to centre on the inappropriate or unacknowledged use of Artificial Intelligence in assessments. While we realise that AI is a large, complicated, and contentious issue, this campaign will specifically focus on the use of AI within assessments.

Our recent "Question of the Week" also indicated that 1 in 4 respondents either weren't clear on what the guidance from the University was, or didn't even know there was any guidance. 

Our advice team has undertaken a project to explore and address these concerns, led by student advisers Hannah Graham and Moray Pryde.

Aims:

• To reduce the number of academic integrity breaches, with a specific focus on those relating to artificial intelligence use 
• To inform students on artificial intelligence use and misuse 
• To ensure that Academic Integrity guidelines, information & processes are applied consistently across the University
• To improve the experience of, and support for, students who are involved in an academic integrity investigation

How You Can Help

ENSA Advice has created and circulated a survey to gather student opinion on their understanding of Academic Integrity at the university, with a specific focus on their knowledge about acceptable uses of Artificial Intelligence, and their opinions on its use in assignments. This data will help us to inform our campaign and any advocacy.
