Crisis Contacts

ENSA Advice can help with all sorts of problems, including welfare, rights and education issues, but we also know that an urgent crisis can happen at any time.

If you need out-of-hours advice, here are some organisations that might be able to help:

Citizens Advice Edinburgh
Citizens Advice Edinburgh helps to solve problems and transform lives. Every day trained volunteers and project staff provide free, confidential, independent and impartial advice on a huge range of issues in Edinburgh.

Breathing Space
This is a confidential helpline, which operates Monday-Thursday 6pm-2am and all weekend (Friday 6pm-Monday 6am). All calls are confidential and are handled by trained staff. The service is free from land lines and most mobile networks.

Edinburgh Crisis Centre
This centre provides a 24-hour helpline, 365 days a year, to those in crisis due to mental health issues. Support is provided to those aged 18 years or over who live in Edinburgh.
All support is confidential and is handled by trained staff.

Glasgow Mental Health Crisis Service
Available 24 hours a day including weekends and public holidays.

Mental Health Assessment Service (MHAS)
This is an NHS emergency mental health assessment service for people experiencing a mental health crisis. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is based at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. This service is also available at the Royal Infirmary from 5pm until 8am.

NHS 24
Phone NHS 24 for non-emergency help if you're feeling ill when your doctor's surgery is closed and you feel you can't wait until it re-opens.

Nightline
Nightline is a confidential helpline and online messenger run by students for students. All volunteers are trained. The service is available 8pm - 8am during term times.

Rape Crisis Scotland
This service provides emotional support and practical advice to anyone affected by sexual violence. They have a free helpline 7 days a week 6pm - midnight.

Samaritans
Confidential 24 hour helpline. All volunteers are trained.

Victim Support
The lead organisation in Scotland helping people affected by crime. The service is free and confidential. The Scottish helpline operates 8am-8pm Monday to Friday and the UK helpline operates
9am-9pm Monday to Friday and 9am-7pm at weekends.

Breathing Space Scotland
Breathing Space is a free confidential listening service which offers callers advice, guidance and support, underpinned by empathy and understanding. It is aimed at those (particularly, but not exclusively young men) who are suffering from mental health problems and emotional distress. Phone 0800 83 85 87. Lines open 6pm-2am, Monday to Thursday and 6pm Friday-6am Monday. 

Crew 2000
A drug information and advice service that provides support to anyone using drugs such as cannabis, speed, ecstasy or cocaine. Trained volunteers are young people who have good knowledge and understanding of the issues involved.

Edinburgh Nightline
Nightline is a support service run by students for students open from 8pm to 8am. You can talk to one of their trained volunteers about any issue, big or small, in confidence. They can also provide information on a range of things including taxi numbers, sexual health clinics and even exam times. Nightline also offers an online instant messenger service from 8pm to midnight which students may find easier to use than speaking on the phone. Contact 0131 557 4444

Shelter Scotland provides comprehensive housing advice on a wide range of issues from repairs and deposits to neighbour or landlord problems.
