About Us

Formula Student Team Napier is a student-run team at Edinburgh Napier Uni. As a team, we come together to create a vehicle/autonomous software that competes in IMechE's Formula Student competition.

Formula Student Team Napier

We are Formula Student Team Napier (FSTN), a team of dedicated students working to compete in the IMechE Formula Student competitions since 2023.

What is Formula Student?

Formula Student (or FSAE) is the world's largest student engineering competition, with over 600 universities participating. Each year, teams are challenged to design and build a single-seater race car, and then come together to compete in a series of static and dynamic events. As a Scottish team, we compete at Silverstone, the home of British Motorsport.

In the UK, the event is organised by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and held at the world-famous Silverstone circuit with over 100 teams attending. This year, we are competing in 2 main classes: FS & FS-AI.
  • FS, where teams build a small Formula-style car.
  • FS-AI, where teams develop autonomous driving systems for a driverless car provided by the IMechE.

About Us

Our team was founded in December 2021, and is split into 5 main departments:

Technical
Competing in FS class, we've been hard at work for the last 3 years on our first full car, NV2, which we took to Silverstone in July. This was part of our last three-year plan. Starting this year, we will be working on our second full car, NV3, which will take us the next 2–3 years, competing in FS Class in 2028 or 2029.

Driverless
Competing in FS-AI class Developing an autonomous driving system which them runs on an electric race car provided by the IMechE. Our AI team has achieved 2 top-5 overall finishes, with a number of podiums in individual events.

Media & Ops
The Media and Operations department works on the team's marketing, social media, events, and competition planning.

Business & Sponsorships
The Business and Sponsorships department is crucial to securing the financial resources and sponsored equipment the team needs to make our project possible. Alongside this, they create and present two "Dragons' Den"-style business plans at competition.

Infrastructure
The Infrastructure department supports the team by deploying, managing, and maintaining critical services that support the team's operations and lower barriers to entry.
