Formula Student

We are Formula Student Team Napier (FSTN), a team of dedicated students working to compete in the IMechE Formula Student competitions from 2023 onwards.

What is Formula Student?

Formula Student (or FSAE) is the world's largest student engineering competition, with over 600 universities participating. Each year, teams are challenged to design and build a single-seater race car, and then come together to compete in a series of static and dynamic events. As a Scottish team, we compete at Silverstone here in the UK.

In the UK, the event is organised by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and held at the world-famous Silverstone circuit with over 100 teams attending. Here, the competition is split into 2 main classes: FS & FS-AI.
  • FS is the ‘standard’ class, where teams build a small Formula-style car.
  • FS-AI has teams develop autonomous driving systems for a driverless car.

About Us

Our team was founded in December 2021, and since then we have been hard at work developing an internal combustion (IC) car, which we will compete with at Silverstone in July.

Additionally, we are developing autonomous driving software in order to compete in the FS-AI events. The software will be implemented on a car that IMechE provides.

The team currently consists of 50+ students, who are spread across 5 different departments in the team: Technical, Driverless, Finance, Operations, and PR & Marketing.
